SVCTE Fashion Show

Last week my classmates and i put together a fashion show with the help of my teacher and i turned out amazing. The behind the scenes, well that was a lot to figure out, right before we walked out it was just nervousness and drinking tons of water. When it was time for us to change after our first collections, let me just say that i never did something so fast in my life but it was an awesome experience. my favorite part of the show was the second part, everyone just threw on a shirt and the ones who didn't wear a shirt wore an avante garde look. it definitely was risky just walking out in just a shirt and nothing but your underwear and bra or boxers underneath, but it worked out perfectly. i just remember after it was over, the audience loved it and i just went to my instructor and hugged her because she made it possible by pushing us outside of our comfort box of creativity and we got a great fashion show. The teamwork was just unbelievable with each group because there were some people staying after to finish the collections just the day before the show and it worked because everything was finished.

The head designer of Comme Des Garcons is Rei Kawakubo. The aesthetic that she has is to use unthinkable materials, unconventional items are being used a lot more. The label was designed by rei herself because she wanted to be a non conformist in the fashion industry.

A goal is the object of a person's ambition or effort, on aim or desired result. I do have goals of my own and they are usually long term. i do think goals are important because they get you to the next step or next place you want to be.

Yesterday i learned that fiber turns into yarn and yarn turns into fabric. Fiber is the foundation of fabric; it is a small, hair like substance. Wool is a fiber with a hair like substance, but when you handle it, your hands will feel soft and oily from the lanolin. Lanolin is an oil that can be used in cosmetics, shampoo, and ointment. when i handled some of the wool that was given to me by my teacher for a wool spinning experience, i thought it was really great because while doing so i learned how women would spin the wool back when we didn't have certain machines.

Silk is another natural fiber many designers love to use in garments. The silk that is used, it's made from the silk worms cocoons. The worm spins the silk around itself and to get the best silk they are fed mulberry leaves. The designers usually don't want broken silk strands so before they break through the cocoon, they are boiled and they end up dying. I think it's kind of sad, but that's how they want their fabric. If they would want some color in silk they would dye the fibers.

One of the trends i liked were the denim dresses, skirts and jackets. I already planned to incorporate some of these things in to my spring clothing, i mean i do have a denim jacket already. If i were to buy a denim skirt or dress i would probably look at this thrift store i like to go to, it is where i got my jean jacket, the store is Fallas. i really do think i would achieve all of these looks just by asking family members for their old clothes because they would most likely have it and thrifting is way better than shopping somewhere that its only going to last for so long.

Critical thinking is the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment.
Critical thinking is extremely important in the fashion world because when something isn't right with a garment, or something just isn't right, you have to evaluate the problem and figure out what's wrong  and fix it quick because in the fashion world you are given deadlines. If you don't finish on time, it can be critical to your status as a fashion designer or just your job position in the industry. Sometimes it just can get really hard and overwhelming, but it takes patience and you just have to get through it even though it's a tough industry to follow.

In the article It's the Second Dirtiest Thing in the World—And You’re Wearing It , i read that it is the second largest polluter in the world, and the first one is oil. Even though we need to wear clothes, we have a style and we want all the fashion trends fast, it sucks but it is the truth. The fashion industry can get nasty because of how it can effect the environment, in a bad way. Eileen fisher was right by saying that "it's a really nasty business ... it's a mess" like i said before it is because we always throw away clothes that we don't want. I do feel like a lot more designers should speak out more and find alternate ways to conduct business.

How is your group's collection like a story? How do the pieces complement each other? Why would your customer's want to put themselves in the middle of your story?

The collection my group is doing is like a story because its telling the audience that you can be tough, seductive and sinister. The pieces compliment each other by having the same feel towards it, also it has the some of the same elements. I feel like our customers would want to put themselves in our story because it is a story to be told and to be confident, mysterious and seductive.

pinterest board - 1950's  my favorite clothing era is the 1950's, and you can take a look at the link for my Pinterest board. The reason i like the clothing for this era is the style. One particular style i love is the pin-up rockabilly. I know sometimes everyone hates a history lesson but i just love this era so much that maybe i should throw in some history. Princess Elizabeth became Queen 👸👑 at the age of 25 in 1951. The first Playboy Magazine was published in 1953. Rosa parks refuses to give up her seat on the bus in 1955. The civil rights movement, Dangers of the garrison state, balance of trade and more happened during this time that were social, political and economic. I feel like these events influenced the fashion during this era by making everyone feel confident and a bit more equal.

This mood board i'm showing you is not my groups board, but it is similar to the one we made. A mood board could be anything that you are designing, in this case we are using mood boards for fashion. The mood board for us is a collection we have in mind and the aesthetic we decided on was sinister, gothic, seductive, American horror story (AHS), and lady gaga. My groups mood board helped define our collection because we already knew what we wanted and we stuck to our theme, for most people when they create a mood board, they don't always stick to it because they grab whatever they like instead of grabbing what they need for their theme. So i feel our mood board did help us in the long run because it could have looked like this in the end.

RECYCLED FASHION - Savers Trip

So, yesterday my class went on a trip to SAVERS, the reason we went there was to buy different garments as our materials and some unconventional items as props to use for our four garments that we will be making. the reason we are making four garments would be because we are having a fashion show here at my school. while my class got to go to SAVERS, we got to ask the manager some questions, the question i asked was "how much of what doesn't get sold, goes?" and i learned that 40% of the stuff gets shipped out to warehouses in LA and Pheonix, Arizona. The items we got for my groups project were a porclain doll, barbie doll, red candle, silver plater, gold rope, a book (i will not name the book for certain reasons), some lingerie for the lace, red velvet, black velvet, some clothing with mesh, cross necklaces, red leather boots, and some other stuff thats awesome and everything we got was under $150. its a good thing coming out of this would be recycling used clothes.

People who say girls can't wear boy clothes and boys can't wear girl clothes are complete fools. I'm sorry for those who believe that it's wrong, but welcome to the new world because this is our generation and it is time we take a stand in what we believe and do what makes us comfortable. I am a girl and i love wearing boy clothes from time to time, and today is one of those days, in the very last photo i am wearing a guys t-shirt and i love it. It isn't wrong at all to wear the opposite sex clothes, we should be able to wear what we feel comfortable in, especially right now because we are going through an important time of our lives to prove we are all equal. I guess what i am trying to say is that we all should be helping each other instead of breaking us down. I hope from everyone reading this post you would be able to understand we are human beings that should be treated as equal and support each other.

Paco Rabanne | Fall Winter 2017/2018

I chose to watch this fashion show because i was interested in what was to come in fall 2017/2018. A few of the garments caught my attention and i wanted to share this fashion show in particular because the garments are very interesting. Paco Rabanne is the designer and he is new to me, his style and theme caught my eyes and got me hooked. The theme i am getting from this collection is very futuristic. Personally i wouldn't try to wear the garments myself because it's not me, but his collection is very intriguing.

Anniesa Hasibuan made her own statement by having her modelswalk the runway with hijabs, she did this to take a political stand against trump. I actually respect her decision in taking that stand for our rights as people, we are all equal as human beings and i'm also happy that it's being expressed through fashion. I'm just excited to see what will come next after this, because if anyone decides to pay attention, it's through fashion, we all wear clothes.

Dolce & Gabbana

 

Dolce & Gabbana is a luxury Italian fashion house formed by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana in 1982. It became one of Italy's most successful ready-to-wear companies. If you watch this 22 minute long video, you will see the garments, and get a feel of how a catwalk should be, in my opinion i love the look that Dolce & Gabbana are going for.  They have a theme that i love for the fall winter fashion week, its just amazing. the structure of the garments are just awesome, they have a royal theme going on and i just love it.

Garments Merchandising

Since i have been in this class (Fashion design), i have learned new techniques and now that we are in our 2nd semester of this class we have been given a new challenge. We were to be asked to buy a pattern, fabric, and zippers or buttons for our next project, we were to make our own garment and doing so would be harder for us because we are basically on our own. This challenge was a good thing for all of us at the same time, we were able to ask our peers for help which saved us from making a mistake, but sometimes we did and that's ok because we learned from it. the struggles i came across with my garment were mostly from the thread bunching up or the straps to my garment not cooperating with me, but it was frustrating and usually when i feel myself getting flustered i would take a minute and breathe. I feel like ever since i've been in this class i have more respect for designers.

"Designers got the memo that velvet is the new fabric of our lives." Well i would say velvet made an impact on many girls closets because its a very popular fabric in clothing but i wouldn't say its a fabric of our lives. My opinion on velvet, its very cute and stylish but i wouldn't wear it on a daily basis in my opinion because i feel like it sticks to your body and gets ruined easily. 

Do You Worry Colleges or Employers Might Read Your Social Media Posts Someday?

I honestly don't have anything to worry about colleges or employers looking at my social media if they ended up doing just that. The things i post are just about family selfies and the band i love, so there isn't really any worry. Let's say for example if i were somebody else who doesn't care and posted what i want like contraband, bikini selfies, ect., it would make colleges and employers think that i'm an alcoholic and druggie who over sexualizes everything, so they wouldn't hire me or accept me. Since i don't do anything like that on social media then i am okay.

 What surprised me on the red carpet at the Grammy's was Joy Villa's "Make America great again" dress. I honestly think joy as a celebrity, she shouldn't have worn that dress because she is a role model in so many people's eyes and now she wore that dress, she looks like she is all for trump and i really think she should have made a dress change before she walked out of her house.but enough of the "make america great again" part, the dress itself is nicely fitted but the halter top isn't flattering and the mermaid poof isn't nice either but it does have great volume and structure in that specific part.

 Camila Cabello wore my favorite dress because its princess like, flowy, it has structure and a little bit of texture, even the drop waist is flattering. The color is great on her, the bodice is great to i love it, the dress fits well and looks great  on her.

 I think the worst dressed was girl crush, the pink bandeau is cute but the skirt of gumballs or balloons is not cute or flattering to the figure. It does have structure, but to much volume and it has an umpire waistline which cuts off the figure. I feel like the oscars fashion is more fancy and formal than anything and the grammys is just fancy and fun. so i think celebrities are willing to take a risk because they want to show that you can be you and dont care about others thoughts.

Raf Simons used his creativity to an advantage when it came to Donald trump when he was elected as president, he said if you have a voice you should use it, so that is what he did with his fashion line. His style is very strange and unique but i don't like it very much. He used to work for this very famous fashion house before working for Calvin Klein but i don't know the name of it.

 The McCall's pattern company was founded in 1863,it looked like a business that time forgot but it finds itself newly fashionable. The company tries to keep the patterns fresh. The patterns created at the McCall's company are blueprints, they are essential for the do-it-yourself men and women who want to be seen as fashionable, but don't want to go to the most expensive name brand shops. The process of picking a McCall's pattern has not changed since the 1980's.

Diane Guerrero wore my favorite dress, its just really nicely fitted. The color i seen the most was black.this dress was my favorite look because it is fitted and simple but at the same time its got a bit of volume and sass. i don't know the designer behind the dress but whoever made it, they are amazing because its awesome.

Wedding Dresses from Toilet Paper!

    The wedding dress project was a way for us to break the ice and get to know each other and learn how to work with others. The design that we did was more of a geometric and architectural feel. I learned that lines can make a huge difference for the physical appearance of the body, and the design itself and how it is strategically placed either can keep the eyes stuck on one spot or keep the eyes moving and i feel like our design keeps the eyes moving. The train on the dress was the hardest part of the dress because we put all the flowers on individually and we made them all, but we had the idea to have two people making them and two people putting them on and it worked out perfectly. As i mentioned before the lines that have been used in this design are vertical,horizontal, diagonal and curved. vertical lines can make a person appear taller and narrow, horizontal lines make the eyes move from side to side and make someone appear wider and shorter but the only thing that is effected is the wider part, diagonal lines give the illusion of height, and curved lines can achieve different effects.

Why do you think color is so important in fashion?

   

        I think that color is important in fashion because color choices say a lot about the image we are trying to portray, and how we feel about ourselves. Color also has an impact on your body shape, weight, your emotions and others emotions. There is a catch with color in fashion though, it has to be appropriate for the location, your age, occasion, time of year and your natural coloring. An example of this would be like wearing a red jacket and a white shirt to a business meeting would portray confidence.  

What are "norms" ? why is it so important for organizations or group to have a set of "norms" by which they function?

"Norms" are informal guidelines about what is considered normal 
social behavior in a particular group. I think it is important that in a certain group there are "norms" because that is just how it is going to work. But, the fashion "norms" that others see, they hate it and change it. The people who are breaking the fashion "norms" i love them for it because we are changing everything and its awesome.

 We aren't the only ones who can wear clothes. Dogs can wear clothing to and this cute little dog is wearing a panda halloween costume. This video has showed up on social media about 2 months ago and since then it has gotten 194,410 views on youtube  and its awesome because of how cute and funny it is. this video just explains it all. i still can't believe that clothes make dogs happy to.

The Golden Globe's Fashion

    Emily Ratajkowski in Reem Acra, her look was my favorite look out of most fashion choices at the Golden Globes. I felt like her dress was the most flattering to her figure and was not floating on her body and it's a really great color on her. 
  Carrie Underwood in Iris Serban, her dress is my least favorite out of every dress that was worn. It's a really pretty color , the skirt is nice but the top is just woah and not the good kind of woah, i feel like if it were a different and subtle design on the top and some jewelry i would see a better dress. 
 the color that i seen most was white, one of the styles that were seen on the red carpet the most were the deep v-plunge, and to be honest i don't think there was a lack of jewelry or to much of it because the style of the dresses or the bling on the dresses were just enough. The only surprise                          on the red carpet was the yellow.

I don't see it as a surprise at all  because beyonce and jay-z are blue ivy's parents and they have great taste in clothing. As blue grows up and is put into these clothes, she starts to love the clothes and they become her because of her personality. "Her style" actually fits her, the clothing is just really great at the same time because she wears whats in right now and she became a fashion icon just at 5.

 New year's is always about having resolutions, and every year we make new ones maybe because we realized we need to work on something that we realized the last year or because we know we didn't want to work on the old since it wasn't possible to fix. This year i made a resolution to just get through my junior year and to not get into trouble because freshman and sophomore year were not the greatest of times. In this class i'm taking i would like to challenge myself to be more focused on my work but also make new friends and be open to new ideas. I think i can accomplish these just by listening to what others have to say talking to others and getting straight on task.
